The longer I stay in this career of mine, I realize that my focus on my own health and wellness comes down to the goal of living a long, healthy life. And as I hit a ripe old age, I still want able to do the things I enjoy. Needless to say, this is also what I want for my clients. While your genes and family history play an important role in determining your longevity, they are only part of your personal destiny. Your own habits, choices, and routines really matter if your ambition is to live long and prosper!
Following are basic hints that I subscribe to for those of you wanting to live a long time. They are indeed basic but nevertheless crucial:
1. Diet matters a great deal. Research has shown that consuming whole fresh foods, olive oil, fruits, fish, nuts, and vegetables—the fundamentals of the Mediterranean diet—has been shown to have a remarkable an impact on overall health.
2. Being social is also a big deal. Connection to community and/or family can impact the number of your years on the planet. So find your peeps and spend quality time with them.
3. Moving your body regularly, in whatever form of exercise you favor, goes a very long way in extending your life. And while you’re at it, definitely limit your amount of couch time. There’s an expression out there that I believe is right on—“Sitting is the new smoking.”
4. Meditation can actually change the telomeres in your body. Just so you know, a telomere is a region of repetitive DNA at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration. It goes without saying, protecting them is crucial to your health.

What if longevity doesn’t run in your family?
Take heart—genes and hereditary patterns are not the sole determining predictors of your future time on earth.
Keep your foods as “clean” as possible (that is, without preservatives and additives), get your heart rate elevated for a least a minute three times a week, get outside as much as possible, do yoga with someone experienced, and, finally, drop the toxic people in your life!
