Here’s the question: is it really hopeless for women over 40 to try to lose weight?

Nope. Not at all …

In fact, the same principles followed by younger people who wish to shed a few pounds also apply to us, even as our bodies age … okay, with a few modifications.

These include:
1.) Eat less—not to the point of starvation or neglecting your nutritional needs; simply cut down portion size. Try to eat a hearty lunch and then a light dinner.
2.) Consume healthy fats with every meal. (For example, the necessary 7-10 grams are found in 1/4 of an avocado).
3.) Do enough cardio to get your heart rate elevated to near maximum for at least a minute, three times a week.
4.) Consider supplements to compensate for the inevitable diminishing of hormone levels that affect your strength. Healthy protein supplements are easily found and tolerated. Other methods or practices that can enhance strength pathways include acupuncture, reiki, tai chi, among others.
5.) Keep old pictures of yourself around for motivation!
6.) Eliminate from your life—if possible—the people, places, and things that take your energy.
7.) Keep a food journal. As much as you think you’re following a healthy diet, unless you record what you’re eating daily, you won’t have a clear idea. Wishful thinking will not get the job done. Furthermore, just the process of food journaling increases awareness.

We all do lose muscle mass as we age, so our usual activities often slow down some. As a result of a slower pace, we tend to accumulate fat. But all is not lost. You just need to strongly counter “hopeless” with commitment and focus.

I know a woman of about 65, who with one change in her diet lost nearly 20 pounds.

For her lunch she decided to drink—every day—a veggie juice that was sold in the supermarket. For her, that was enough to reverse the tide and she dropped considerable weight.

If you are serious about making a change, put together a support team, come up with a plan, and stick with it. Or call me 🙂
